A Kannapolis man’s bond was set at $100,000 Thursday after he was charged with possessing drugs and having a gun despite being a convicted felon.

The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office Aggressive Criminal Enforcement Team members stopped a black Ford Taurus at 2101 South Main St. in Kannapolis on Thursday for a traffic violation.

The deputy’s K-9 Kilo conducted an exterior sniff on the vehicle and alerted to the odor of narcotics.

During a further search of the vehicle, a .40 caliber Glock pistol was found, according to a report.

After the driver was handcuffed, he was searched, and deputies found a bag containing 25 grams of “crack” cocaine hidden in his crotch area. It had a street value estimated at $5,000.

Christopher Novell McCauley, 4866 Hawfield St. in Kannapolis, was charged with possession with intent to sell or deliver a Schedule II drug, felony possession of a Schedule II drug and possession of a firearm by a felon.

McCauley was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $100,000 bond. His first court date was set for Monday.

McCauley has a lengthy criminal record that includes convictions for armed robbery, possession of a firearm by a felon and drug possession. He was also placed on Project Safe due to his lengthy record, the sheriff’s report said.
