Mayfest brings spring fun this week

SALISBURY — A new spring festival starts Wednesday at the Rowan County Fairgrounds.
Mayfest 2013 will begin at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and continue through Sunday at the Rowan County Fairgrounds, 1560 Julian Road.
The event will feature carnival rides, nightly entertainment, a petting zoo, food, crafts and vendor displays. Carnival rides and attractions are provided by Smokey Mountain Amusements from Robbinsville.
Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. nightly. Saturday and Sunday will have extended hours, with the gates opening at 2 p.m.
Admission is $3 per person. Children younger than 3 years old can attend for free. Armbands for rides will be available for $20 on Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m.
Thursday night is Dollar Night, sponsored by Cornerstone Church. All rides are $1 each.
A truck pull is planned for Friday.
The Stars of Nojoe’s Circus also will be at Mayfest. During the past year, the traveling troupe has traveled to 13 states and performed more than 700 shows nationwide.
The exhibit hall at the fairgrounds will be home to craft vendors and area businesses that wish to promote their products and services to those attending.
