Snipers winning vs. international competition

The North Carolina Snipers 8U baseball team has won its first four games in the Disney International Salute to Baseball in Orlando.

The Snipers won 11-5 against a team from Panama, 14-8 against a Puerto Rico entry, 14-3 against Knoxville, Tenn., and 8-2 against Venezuela.

Randy Crainshaw is the head coach.

Tournament play for the Snipers started on July 8.

The Snipers will play Tejanos Baseball from Texas today for the championship.

American Legion

High Point edged Kernersville 4-3 to take a two games to one lead in a best-of-five series on Friday.

The teams will playGame 4 at 11 a.m. today in High Point, and if Kernersville wins, the teams will play Game 5 at 3 p.m.

• Stanly pulled away for a 14-3 win Friday against the Mooresville Moors to take a 2-1 lead in that best-of-five series.

Clay Fesperman drove in a run to break a 1-all tie in the third and put Stanly ahead to stay. Fesperman later added a two-run double.

Provisions have been made for a doubleheader today, if necessary, as the third round must start Sunday.

Stanly will host the Moors in Game 4 at 1 p.m. If the Moors win that one to stay alive, Game 5 also will be played today at 4.

Rowan County will open a series with High Point or Kernersville on Sunday. Randolph will open a series with Stanly or the Moors on Sunday.

Rowan, Randolph, Kernersville and the Moors are No. 1 seeds. High Point and Stanly are No. 3 seeds.

Local golf

In the eGolf Tour’s Southern Open at The Club at Irish Creek, Chip Lynn leads after three rounds at 16-under 197.

Salisbury’s Frank Adams III is tied for 18th at 6-under. Adams has shot 70-69-68 — 207.

Will Collins (Salisbury) has shot 69-70-72 — 211 and is tied for 38th at 2-under.

• In the Carolinas Amateur Championship at Kiawah Island, Roy Dixon III (Salisbury) has shot 71-77 — 148. Dixon is tied for eighth at 4-over after two rounds of the four-round event.

A number of players were unable to complete the second round because of weather delays and darkness.

Junior Legion

West Rowan and Kernersville were unable to play on Friday.

Their third-round series is now set to begin tonight at East Forsyth High.

Minor leagues

The Kannapolis Intimidators lost to the Greensboro Grasshoppers 2-1 at CMC-NorthEast Stadium on Friday.

Jesus Solorzano and Blake Barber homered for Greensboro. Keon Barnum drove in the Kannapolis run.

Chad James pitched five shutout innings for Greensboro. Euclides Leyer pitched six strong innings for the Intimidators, but his record fell to 2-12.

Kannapolis hosts the Hoppers tonight in a throwback game, with ticket prices and concessions rolled back to 1999 levels. Kannapolis will take the field in throwback Boll Weevils uniforms. There also will be an auction and lots of prizes.

• Corey Seager (NW Cabarrus) had three hits for Great Lakes on Friday to raise his batting average to .303.

•Whit Merrfield (Davie) had two hits for the Northwest Arkansas Naturals on Friday to lift his batting average to .255.
