Rowan juniors shut out West

Rowan American Junior Legion beat West Rowan 10-0 in five innings Tuesday in their playoff series.

Harrison Bell got the win for Rowan throwing a complete game, 2-hit shutout. Jeremy Simpson, Dustin Ritchie, Scott Sapp, and Harrison Bell all had two hits each for Rowan.

Rowan will play at West Rowan tomorrow at 7 p.m. in the series-deciding Game 3.

• In a Game 1 win, West Rowan’s Noah Teeter had a triple that an error would allow him to score on.

Prep football

East Rowan will have picture day for fall sports on August 7. Football will be the first sport taken at 3 p.m.

Livingstone football

Livingstone has named former defensive backs coach Rodney Hughey as the defensive coordinator. Brian White was named offensive line coach and Rodney Simmons is the defensive line coach.

Local golf

Lily Yatawara (Salisbury, Appalachian State) shot an 80 to tie for 18th at qualifying for the Carolinas Women’s Amateur Championship. Yatawara will be placed into a flight for the duration of play. The top 16 players advanced to the championship round.

• Thirty Corbin Hills women played in a Blind Nine event Tuesday. Winners were:

First low gross was Phyllis Durland. Second was Beth Calhoun with third going to Kristi Laton and Faye Cline getting fourth.

Low net winners were Carolynn Ries (1st), Margaret Meek (2nd), Cindy Carmazzi (3rd) and Norma Burgess (4th).

Low putts were won by Mary Seaford followed by Monica Green.

• Michael Childress got a hole-in-one at Sapona Ridge on Thursday, July 9. Childress aced No. 7, a 135-yard par 3 with a nine iron. His playing partner was Christopher Queen.

East Rowan passes

East Rowan is selling sports passes for the upcoming school year.

An all-sports pass allows access to all regular season home contests at East. The first pass is $120 and the second pass $90. The total for a family of four is $350.

An all sports pass with reserved parking and seating for football is $145. A football-only pass with reserved seating and parking is $50 and $40 for all additional passes. An extra parking pass is $10. For more information, contact John McNeil at 704-279-5232 ext. 109.


The West Virginia Power held on to beat the Kannapolis Intimidators 3-1 Tuesday night. Tyler Glasnow threw six shutout innings for the Power.

• The Intimidators received catcher Jeremy Dowdy from Double-A Birmingham Tuesday.
