Weather permitting, the B-17 bomber that portrayed the Memphis Belle in the movie of the same name is scheduled to leave the Rowan County Airport at noon Friday.
The plane, famous for portraying the bomber that was first to complete 25 successful missions in World War ll, has been at the airport for three weeks. Interior work has now been completed by Carolina Avionics and Interiors, and Liberty Foundation pilots are set to fly the big bomber to storage before winter weather sets in.
The public is invited to attend the departure. Anyone interested in attending should check with the airport to confirm actual departure time.
On Saturday, Santa Claus will skydive into the airport for the first time ever. His arrival is scheduled for shortly after 9 AM. Santa will remain at the airport until noon to talk with children.
Both events are free. Donations and canned goods will be accepted for Rowan Helping Ministries. Parking is on the airport grounds and will be plentiful.
