RALEIGH (AP) — The North Carolina Department of Agriculture is reporting that state growers are feeling peachy about the prospects for this year’s peach harvest.
Farmers are telling state officials that they started picking the fruit this week and that they expect a strong crop into September.
Peaches are grown statewide, but the highest concentration of growers is in the Sandhills. State officials say Montgomery, Anson and Moore counties are the top peach-producing counties.
Several special events are planned this month across the state to celebrate the peach harvest including Peach Day at the State Farmers Market in Raleigh on July 11.
