WINSTON-SALEM (AP) — Winston-Salem police say one of their officers shot and wounded a man during a struggle.
Police say Officer Larry Blevins was on patrol Sunday morning when he encountered a man suspected of having illegal drugs.
Police say Blevins struggled with 35-year-old Victor Darnell Fortune of Rural Hall and then shot him.
Fortune was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center where he was treated and released. He’s been charged with possession of marijuana, possession with intent to sell and distribute cocaine, resisting a police officer and assaulting a police officer.
It was not clear if he has an attorney.
Blevins has been placed on administrative duty while the shooting is investigated. He’s been with the Winston-Salem Police Department for more than two years.
