Rufty-Holmes Senior Center is offering a new Zumba class beginning Monday, Jan. 7. The weekly class will be Monday evenings from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. in the fitness annex. The annex has a sports floor specifically designed to be more protective for dance and other fitness movements. The class will be taught by a licensed Zumba instructor who is also a senior fitness specialist.
If you receive medical care for an ongoing health condition, or have not been exercising, check with your doctor prior to participating in any exercise class. For more information about Zumba classes, call Rufty-Holmes Senior Center at 704-216-7714.
The class is an aerobic fitness workout that combines upbeat music and easy-to-follow dance steps. The class incorporates interval training, alternating fast and slow rhythms, so it burns more calories than something like jogging. Recent research shows that participating in a Zumba fitness class will burn an average of 369 calories. The workout is also good for toning muscles, strengthening bones and increasing endurance. The class can be modified to avoid joint-aggravating movements.
