SALISBURY — A 20-year-old woman was injured after a pit bull attacked her during a morning smoke break Wednesday.
Rowan County Animal Control Officer Thomas Staton said Emily Houston was bitten along the left leg in the 700 block of North Church Street about 11 a.m.
Houston was later taken to Novant Health Rowan Medical Center and was expected to undergo surgery.
“She had a large gash on the outside of her left leg — left thigh — and on the inside of her left thigh,” Staton said. “She had several big puncture wounds.”
Authorities quarantined the pit bull at the Rowan County Animal Shelter where it will remain for 10 days, Staton said. Investigators said they have not determined if charges will be filed against the dog’s owner, Marcus Bush.
Hospital officials said Houston remained in good condition Thursday morning.
