Jay Erskine Leutze, author of “Stand Up That Mountain: The Battle to Save One Small Community in the Wilderness Along the Appalachian Trail,” will be at Literary Bookpost Monday, Jan. 14, 6-8 p.m.
He will begin with a discussion and then sign books. Leutze came to Salisbury in August 2012 for a presentation at the Catawba College Center for the Environment. His book was reviewed in the Salisbury Post on Sunday, Aug. 19.
The book is the true story of efforts to save Belview Mountain from a gravel crushing operation that would tear the mountain down. The working pit was visible from the Appalachian Trail.
Leutze, who finished law school but never pursued a career in law, is drawn into the fight by a feisty mountain woman and a brilliant 14-year-old girl. Together, they document the operation, enlist the help of conservation agencies and take their fight to Raleigh, where they successfully shut down the operation. The book reads like a thriller and includes many details about government behind the scenes.
