Haley Ellen Barrier of Salisbury graduated cum laude from Duke University in December 2012 and participated in the May 12, 2013, commencement exercises. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in Chemistry.

While at Duke, Haley was a DeanÕs List student and received the Betsy Alden Service-Learning Outstanding Senior Award. She studied abroad at the University of Oxford and served as an Ambassador for Durham Regional Emergency Department.

Haley devoted much of her time to the Duke Chemistry Outreach program, serving as both a volunteer and a teaching assistant as she shared chemistry demonstrations throughout North Carolina, in Washington, D.C., and at the 2012 Biennial Conference on Chemical Education at Penn State.

She earned her North Carolina nursing assistant and emergency medical technician certifications and is currently employed by The Medicine Shoppe in Salisbury. Haley will attend medical school at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in August.

The 2009 co-valedictorian of East Rowan High School, she is the daughter of Lonnie and Lisa Barrier, the granddaughter of Lonzo and Martha Arey, Joan and the late Karr Barrier and is the fiancee of Nolan Stehr.
