Susan Kluttz, who has been tapped by Gov.-elect Pat McCrory to serve as secretary of cultural resources, is the fourth Salisbury resident to be named to the state cabinet.

The late Jake Alexander Sr. served as secretary of transportation. The late James Summers served as secretary of natural Resources and community development, now known as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Rowan County native Phil Kirk served twice as secretary of human resources.

Salisbury will be well represented at the Department of Cultural Resources. Kluttz joins former Salisbury resident Dr. Kevin Cherry, who in August was appointed deputy secretary of the Office of Archives and History. Cherry worked as History Room librarian from 1995 to 2000 at the Rowan Public Library.

As Salisbury mayor, Kluttz served longer than anyone else — 14 years. Currently mayor pro tem, she is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she also serves on the Board of Visitors.

Along with McCrory, Kluttz helped found the N.C. Metropolitan Mayors Coalition, where she served as vice-chairman from 2009 to 2011. She has served on board of the N.C. League of Municipalities, on the Chief Justice’s Commission on Professionalism and on the committee to develop a model ethics code for elected officials at the UNC School of Government.

In Salisbury, she serves on the board of F&M Bank, the Salisbury Community Development Corporation, and Salisbury- Rowan Project Safe Salisbury. She is a trustee of Rowan-Cabarrus Community College and on the boards of the N.C. Center for Afterschool Programs and the newly formed N.C. Community and Business Alliance.

Kluttz is married to Rowan County District Court Judge William Kluttz Jr. Their family includes son Lt. Cmdr. William Kluttz III and his wife MacLean Clinard Kluttz of Newport, R.I.; daughter Susan Kluttz Smith and her husband William Smith of Burlington; and a grandson William Kluttz IV.
