NC Synod-ELCA Bishop Invites Renewal in Congregations

More than 550 members and guests of the North Carolina Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) gathered May 31-June 1 for its annual synod assembly. Representing over 200 ELCA congregations across North Carolina, they met on the campus of Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory

The theme of the 2013 NC Synod Assembly was “Joyfully Sharing God’s Story.” NC Synod Bishop Leonard Bolick opened opening the Assembly.

A key element of the Assembly was the unveiling of the new for 2013-15synodical emphasis, “FORWARD TOGETHER: In Christ. In Community.” The goal for each congregation, with the help of a companion facilitator, is to discern “who God is calling it to be and do.” The emphasis will officially begin in September.

A highlight of the Assembly was Lutheran Services Carolinas (LSC) president Ted Goins’ announcement that LSC’s “Keeping the Promise” campaign has exceeded its $5 million goal. The campaign will assist LSC’s senior services with the costs of new nursing homes in Wilmington, Winston-Salem, Clemmons, and Hickory; assist with the costs of targeted renovations for existing buildings in Albemarle, Salisbury, and Hickory; and expand the Research Triangle Area capital fund.

In elections, the Rev. Gary Weant, pastor of Philadelphia Lutheran Church, Dallas, NC, was re-elected as Synod Secretary. Members of the synod’s council and of synod agency and institution boards were also elected.

Three new synodically approved worshiping communities were welcomed into the synod. They are Celebration, an extension of Abiding Saviour Church, Durham; Opportunity House, Shelby; and Montagnard Mission Post, Charlotte, an extension of Community in Christ Church, Cornelius.

The North Carolina Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America serves over 200 congregations across the state. It is one of 65 synods of the ELCA, which has more than 10,000 congregations.
