SALISBURY — Salisbury City Council will not wait until 2013 to vote on borrowing $2.5 million to upgrade the 800 trunking system, part of the public safety radio network.
Council members had tabled the issue until Jan. 3 but will meet instead at 11 a.m. Wednesday in a special meeting at City Hall, 217 S. Main St.
The pending 911 dispatch center consolidation between the city and Rowan County is at a standstill until the city upgrades the 800 trunking system.
But council members this week weren’t ready to award a $2.5 million sole source contract to Motorola Solutions Inc. “Sole source” means no bids were taken on the project.
Council members said they wanted to better understand financing for the project, and a committee met Thursday to discuss the issue.
Rowan County had extended a deadline to allow the city to vote Dec. 18. Missing the deadline could end up costing hundreds of thousands of dollars, Assistant City Manager John Sofley said.
