MOORESVILLE — Any lingering after-taste from a 4-19 season was washed away on Tuesday night by a program that has made the subtle name switch from South Rowan to Southern Rowan.

Southern Rowan, coached by Ben Hampton and Chris Cauble, rolled 12-3 on Tuesday in its road opener against the Mooresville Moors (1-1).

“Our pitchers did a great job,” Cauble said. “We only had one walk, and that was in the ninth inning.”

Dillon Parker, coming off a sensational 9-1 season for South Rowan High, pitched five strong innings.

“He was fantastic,” Cauble said. “He was cruising, but we knew going in that we were going to be taking a look at several pitchers.”

Aaron Bare pitched the sixth and seventh. Billy Winecoff threw the eighth. Former Carson reliever Austin Bracewell worked the ninth.

Offensively, outfielder Dylan Carpenter picked up right where he left off in high school. Carpenter batted .425 with 25 RBIs for Carson, and he rapped out four of Southern Rowan’s 11 hits.

John Daugherty, another Carson standout, had two hits.

Southern Rowan will mostly be a mix of the county’s two winningest teams — a 24-4 Carson squad and a 19-9 South Rowan High unit.

“We know we’ve got three very good pitchers in Parker, Dillon Atwell and Daugherty,” Cauble said. “We’ve got a chance to contend if some of our other pitchers come through. We’ve got very good numbers. We’ve cut eight and we’ve still got 26 now.”

The program has East Carolina-bound South Rowan catcher Eric Tyler for the first time and added another all-star catcher, Carson’s Bryson Prugh, this week.

Southern Rowan is home tonight against Concord.
