Rowan County Sheriff’s deputies charged a brother and sister following a high speed car chase through Salisbury and China Grove over the weekend. The driver was also charged with child abuse because there were two small children in the vehicle, one of whom was a 3-week-old baby.

Bradford Bennett Jr., 17, of the 300 block of Moon Circle, Salisbury, was charged with two counts of misdemeanor child abuse, felony fleeing to elude arrest, no operator’s license, reckless driving, speeding and failure to have proper child restraints. His sister, Mahogany Clemons, 19, also of the 300 block of Moon Circle, was charged with misdemeanor resist, obstruct and delay an officer.

A Rowan deputy saw a vehicle traveling 74 mph in a 55 mph zone heading south on U.S. 29 on Saturday. The deputy tried to make a stop, but the driver of the vehicle, later identified as Bennett, did not stop. The driver sped up in excess of 100 mph, a report said.

Bennett drove onto Webb Road and attempted to turn around when the officer blocked him with his patrol vehicle. The vehicle headed onto Interstate 85 and the driver continued until he crossed over four lanes of traffic to the China Grove exit. The driver traveled back onto U.S. 29 as China Grove Police assisted in the chase. Bennett drove in the turning lane of U.S. 29 for nearly half a mile and made an erratic turn onto Mount Hope Church Road where he nearly lost control of the car. He then turned onto Moon Circle and jumped from the vehicle and ran. The Sheriff’s deputy ran after Bennett while a trooper with the N.C. Highway Patrol and another deputy stayed with the vehicle.

There were two women in the vehicle, one of whom was Clemons. Clemons’ child, a 1-year-old, was not in a car seat. The other adult was the mother of the 3-week-old. She was cooperative and released. Officials said Clemons left the vehicle and began cursing at officers and became irate. She was uncooperative with law enforcement and was charged. The grandmother of Bennett and Clemons drove to the scene. Upon questioning it was determined she had no driver’s license. The deputies issued a citation to Myra Smith Mackin, 47, also of Moon Circle, for driving while license revoked. Mackin has a permanently revoked license.

Officials with Rowan County Department of Social Services were contacted.

Bennett was issued a $10,000 secured bond after this incident. He has since been released from the county jail. In 2012, Bennett was convicted of resisting an officer, assault on a school official and disorderly conduct, all misdemeanors.
