SALISBURY — Fire trucks, ambulances and a Rowan Rescue Squad air boat squeezed into the Magic Mart parking lot Sunday afternoon to kick off National Emergency Medical Services Week.

Officials from nearly every Rowan County emergency department were on hand at the Jake Alexander Boulevard event for residents to see the vehicles and ask questions.

Erich Byrd, event coordinator and EMS worker, said reaching out and informing residents of the available services was the event’s goal.

“We’re communicating with our public to know what resources we have available and not just that but how we work. If something happens what they can expect, so they’re not surprised by anything,” Byrd said. “And to have a chance to meet the public in a non-emergency situation.”

Byrd said weather dampened the turnout, but officials said several people stopped by to see the emergency equipment Sunday.

National EMS Week will run until May 25. This year’s theme is: “One Mission. One Team.”
