A Salisbury man with a history of time behind bars was charged recently with having an improvised weapon in the Rowan County jail. Authorities found a toothbrush with some type of blade attached to it in the jail after a fight there.

The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office charged Willie James Johnson Jr., 20, of the 200 block of South Merritt Avenue, with misdemeanor possession of weapon by a prisoner. He was issued a secured $5,000 bond, bringing his total bond to $91,000. He remains in the county jail.

Detention Center officers broke up a fight in the jail May 14 and when deputies looked at video, they noticed Johnson reached down for something near his leg. Johnson, who was mistakenly released from jail in 2011, was charged in January with flooding his cell and punching a detention center officer. A second officer was also struck in the incident. He was mistakenly released when a misplaced warrant allowed him to post a lower bond than he’d been held under. In 2011, Johnson was also charged with robbing a Salisbury Domino’s Pizza. The Salisbury Police charged Johnson with robbing two Norfolk Southern train operators at gunpoint. Johnson was convicted in 2012 of possession of stolen goods and two counts assault on an officer.
