Relay for Life teams plan more fundraisers

Members of the committee and teams of Relay For Life of Rowan County are driven to reach the goal each year that is set by the American Cancer Society. The ACS keeps in mind that the economy hasn’t recovered, but also is aware that the cure for cancer requires dollars for research, education and services. Keeping that in mind, teams have fundraisers coming up that might help reach the goal for 2013.

The Wittenberg Lutheran Church Relay For Life team, Spice for Life, hosts a dinner fundraiser for Relay on Tuesday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the church fellowship hall. Cost is a free-will donation to Relay and the American Cancer Society. The menu includes pork loin, mashed potatoes, green beans, slaw and tea. But desserts separately. Contact the church for more information, 704-279-4505. The church is at the corner of Bank and Oak streets, Granite Quarry.

Tuesday is also Post-Relay Bank and Team Appreciation Night at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 200 W. Innes St., from 6 to 7 p.m. Teams are invited to drop in, turn in their post-event fundraising dollars, and receive a small token of appreciation.

On Wednesday, the American Cancer Society is turning 100 years old. Relay for Life is selling luminaria (available at the Post Bank and Team Appreciation Night) and placing it outside of a business or place of residence on Tuesday.

The Bare Bones 5K on Saturday, May 25 will benefit Relay For Life. Start time is 8:30 a.m. at Knox Middle School, and there is a fun run for kids 12 and under at about 9:20 a.m. Contact Salisbury Rowan Runners www.salisburyrowanrunners.org or call 704-310-6741 with any questions. This is the third year Salisbury Rowan Runners has made a portion of proceeds from this race a contribution to Relay For Life of Rowan County.

On Saturday, June 1, join the Friends for Life 1st Annual Golf Tournament for Relay for a shotgun start at 2 p.m. at Crescent Golf Club, 220 Laurel Valley Way, Salisbury. Do lunch with the team and competitors at 12:30 p.m., followed by golf in Captain’s Choice format. Cost is $50 per golfer (includes two mulligans) on four-person teams.
