OLIN — West Rowan pitchers Peyton Greene and Leah McCoy combined to hold North Iredell to five hits Tuesday in the second round of the 3A state playoffs. The free passes and defensive miscues were costly, though, and took away any shot the Falcons had of upsetting the Raiders.

North Iredell erased a one-run deficit in the bottom of the first inning and pulled ahead for good in the second en route to a 12-2 mercy-rule victory.

West Rowan, which knocked off Mega-7 Conference champion Charlotte Catholic in the first round, issued 10 walks, hit a batter and committed five errors.

Lacey Fox pitched five complete innings for the win. .

It was the Raiders’ third victory of the season over West Rowan (9-10). They swept the teams’ North Piedmont Conference series, winning 7-5 and 11-1.

Taylor Martin was 2 for 2 with a walk batting leadoff for the Falcons. She scored in the first to give them a 1-0 lead.

Breanna Davenport tripled to lead off the bottom of the first and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. North Iredell scored the go-ahead run in the second and upped the lead to 6-1 in the third.

The Raiders added four runs in the fourth inning without getting a hit. Aided by four walks and two errors, they sent 10 batters to the plate.

West’s Marisa Yow drove in her second run in the top of the fifth. North Iredell ended the game in the bottom half on back-to-back RBI singles from Marshall and Shelby Summers.

NOTE: The Raiders advanced to the third round and will play on the road at Robinson (22-2).
