Elon sophomore Chelsea White (East Rowan) was honored as Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week.

Elon went 5-0 last week, and White went 3-0.


She struck out eight in throwing a two-hit shutout against N.C. A&T. She won as a starter against Chattanooga and also won a game in relief.

White torn an ACL at the end of her senior year at East and is just now getting back to top form. In her last eight outings, she has a 1.97 ERA, five wins and 27 strikeouts.

Prep tennis

Prep tennis singles and doubles champions will be decided this weekend, with the 3A tournament in Burlington, the 2A and 1A tournaments in Cary and the 4A tournament in Raleigh.

Boys state championships were first held in 1916.

• In the 2A tournament at Cary Tennis Center, Salisbury’s Brock Overcash-Clint Comadoll doubles team will take on Croatan’s Peter Alfano-Jackson Winchester in the first round on Friday at 9 a.m. Two rounds will be played on Friday, with semifinals on Saturday morning and the championship match on Saturday afternoon.

• In the 1A tournament, Gray Stone’s John Latimer will play Franklin Academy’s Harrison Tucker in the first round of singles.

• Five East Rowan players competed in the 3A Midwest Regional in Concord.

Ike Emerson and the doubles team of Jeremy Price-Cameron Thomas lost in the first round. The doubles team of Justin Allen-Evan Rogers won a match before losing in the quarterfinals.

• The second round of the dual team state playoffs is set for today. In 2A, Salisbury is at Newton-Conover. In 3A, East Rowan is at West Henderson.

Prep soccer

Pairings were announced for the first round of the soccer playoffs that are scheduled to start on Wednesday.

In the 2A bracket, Salisbury is at West Stokes, a No. 1 seed.

In 3A, West Rowan is at home against Northwest Cabarrus; Carson is at Southwestern Randolph, and A.L. Brown is at Weddington.

Prep baseball, softball

The first round of the baseball playoffs is scheduled for Friday, and the first round of the softball playoffs also is scheduled for Friday.

In baseball, Salisbury, Carson and East Rowan will have home games, while East Rowan and West Rowan will be on the road. North Rowan will be on the road if it gets a wild-card berth.

In softball, Carson and East Rowan have home games. West Rowan and Salisbury will travel.

Prep track and field

The 1A track state championships will be held at North Carolina A&T on Friday.

The 3A championships will be held on Saturday.

2A and 4A will have their regional meets this Saturday.

Minor leagues

The Kannapolis Intimidators won 4-2 in the second game of a doubleheader on Monday and snapped an eight-game losing streak.

Ruben Sierra, Jean Almanzar and Jason Coats drove in runs for the Intimidators.

Kannapolis lost the opener 2-1 on an error in the seventh.

• Daniel Wagner (South Rowan) is batting .327 for Birmingham.

• L.A. Dodgers prospect Corey Seager (NW Cabarrus) is batting .267 with three homers and 15 RBIs.

Local golf

The second day of practice for the Rowan County Chuch Golf League is today at 5:30 p.m. at McCanless. Today’s practice is for churhces with names starting from L-Z.
