Authorities charged a Rockwell man who they said stabbed his girlfriend’s son in the stomach Saturday night.

John Patrick Benfield, 47, of the 100 block of Sunset Drive, is charged with misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon, a Rowan County Sheriff’s Office report said.

Frank Joseph O’Brien, 27, told a deputy he and Benfield had been talking at the end of Benfield’s driveway around 11 p.m. Saturday when he felt like he’d been punched in the stomach.

O’Brien did not immediately realize he’d been stabbed, the report said.

Capt. John Sifford said O’Brien’s injuries were not serious, but he was taken to Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center. There was no motive given, Sifford said.

Benfield was released after posting a $1,500 secured bond.
