Expect detours on I-85 North this week
The N.C. Department of Transportation has a traffic alert for motorists traveling on I-85 between N.C. 150 (Exit 84) and Belmont Road (Exit 86) in Davidson County. NCDOT will close the interstate in both directions nightly from Tuesday, May 7, to Thursday, May 9, between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., weather permitting, to demolish and remove the Clark Road bridge over I-85.
In preparation for this work, crews may also install lane closures in both the northbound and southbound directions, starting on Monday, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning.
During the interstate closure, all traffic will be directed to exit I-85 and follow a signed detour.
Motorists traveling on I-85 North will:
Exit at N.C. 150 (Exit 84);
Turn left onto N.C. 150;
Turn right onto Old Salisbury Road and proceed for approximately two miles; and
Turn right onto Belmont Road and proceed to the I-85 North entrance ramp on the right.
Motorists traveling on I-85 South will:
Exit at Belmont Road (Exit 86);
Turn left onto Belmont Road;
Turn left onto Old Salisbury Road and proceed for approximately two miles; and
Turn left onto N.C. 150 and proceed to the I-85 South entrance ramp on the left.
During the closures, signs will alert motorists to the detour, and law enforcement officers will be present to assist with traffic flow. NCDOT encourages drivers to go slow and allow additional time to reach their destinations safely while traveling in the work zone. Traffic flow can be monitored via live cameras on the project website.
The removal of the Clark Road Bridge is part of the I-85 Corridor Improvement Project, the state’s top mobility project. NCDOT broke ground in September 2010 on the southern segment of the project, which involves replacing eight bridges, widening 3.3 miles of I-85 from just north of Long Ferry Road (Exit 81) to just north of N.C. 150 and reconstructing the N.C. 150 interchange. The northern segment extends the interstate widening by an additional 3.8 miles from just north of N.C. 150 to just north of I-85 Business. Work on both segments is concurrent and scheduled to be complete in late summer.
