Schools to ask for budget increase Monday

SALISBURY — The Rowan-Salisbury School System is slated to ask county commissioners for a $4.6 million budget increase at Monday’s commissioners meeting.

School board officials opted to ask county administrators for $5.6 million — with $1 million coming from an appropriations fund balance — during a March meeting.

Schools saw the deficit jump to $4.8 million coming into this year’s budgeting process after state cuts, a federal funding program expiration and required local budget cuts. The deficit jumped again when new expenses like middle school resource officers, clerical hires and at-risk youth intervention staff were added.

Vice Chairman Craig Pierce said school officials asked to present the system’s budget concerns before commissioners go into a budget session later this month. County leaders are not expected to vote Monday.

“That’s when the real consideration will get into it,” Pierce said of the budget session. “They wanted to give us a presentation before we get into our budget session. It’s nothing that I’m prepared to vote up or down right now.”

Commissioners are also expected to consider board appointments and budget amendments.
