Presbyterian teens set for 5K Friday
The fastest 5K course in Salisbury is one of the highlights of the TWAM Mission Run and Walk 5K.
TWAM stands for Teens With a Mission and these teens from First Presbyterian Church will use proceeds to help finance their 2013 trip to Costa Rica. The race is a part of Salisbury’s Friday Night Out, which offers activities downtown.
Start time for the 5K is 8 p.m., following a half-mile fun run for children 12 and under at 7:30 p.m.
TWAM is a service organization that began 23 years at First Presbyterian Church in Salisbury. It is made up of 10th-12th graders and a team of adult advisors. TWAM will again be taking an international mission trip and will be building a home for a family in need. This is the eighth annual run, and each has helped fund the group’s summer trip.
The course for the 5K run/walk is in the Salisbury Historic District and is certified accurate by the United States Association of Track and Field. The start is near the corner of Jackson and Fisher streets, and the course will also use Church, Bank, Marsh, Fulton, Mitchell, Jordan and Maupin streets. The finish is near the First Presbyterian Church office on East Fisher Street.
Additional highlights for 5K participants will include a short sleeve dri-fit shirt, refreshments and a chance to win age group awards.
Tricia Johnson and Elizabeth Bergsma are race directors.
Johnson said last year’s trip was memorable for all. “We took down a lean-to shelter that housed a family,” she said. “The father had medical problems because of the long term damp conditions. We worked on the new house and really bonded with the family and the neighbors as they worked along with us. Our kids really fell in love with them all. The neighboring families opened their houses and allowed use of their small kitchen spaces to help prepare a meal to feed the whole neighborhood, about 200 people.”
TWAM works through an organization called “Homes of Hope.”
“That is what our mission week is all about. We help provide hope for the family and the whole neighborhood around them. It is such a rewarding experience for all, sharing the love of Christ and bringing hope to those around you,” Johnson said.
