Show choir, art contest this weekend at A.L. Brown

KANNAPOLIS — A.L. Brown High School will host the William Peace University North Carolina Show Choir Competition and Art Showcase state finals Saturday, May 4 in the Kannapolis Performing Arts Center.

Doors will open to the public at 1 p.m.

Artwork submitted for the competition will be on display during the event.

The show choir competition will begin with the high school division at 2 p.m.

During the high school intermission at 3 p.m., the winners of the Art Showcase competition will be announced.

Following that, the show choir competition will continue with the awards ceremony scheduled for 5 p.m.

The middle school division will begin at 6:45 p.m., with their awards ceremony scheduled for 8:30 p.m..

Tickets for the event are $10. Proceeds will benefit the A.L. Brown choral program. They can be purchased in advance at the school, 415 E. First St., or at the door.

The William Peace University NC Show Choir Competition is the only scholastic music competition in North Carolina to crown a statewide champion.

Schools qualified by first competing at three regional sites in Kannapolis, Winston-Salem and Wilson.

Show Choir is experiencing a resurgence due in part to the popularity of the Fox television show “Glee.”

Art Showcase is the only scholastic art competition in North Carolina with an individual and team component. Scores from individual submissions are combined to create team scores.

Medals will be awarded to students from the top three teams in both competitions. The winning teams will receive trophies.
