West Rowan High School students are finding creative ways to raise funds to help a classmate with cancer.

On April 19, the West Rowan Junior Civitan Club organized a fundraiser for senior Haleigh Evans, who has been recently diagnosed with stage four glioblastoma. Earlier this month, she underwent surgery to have a malignant brain tumor removed.

A student-faculty game with West Rowan students and teachers was held April 19 to raise funds for Relay for Life. The fundraiser for Evans was held during halftime.

Sixteen male students and teachers agreed to dress up like women in front of the school if the club reached its $500 goal. They went through with their pledge after students raised a total of $700.

An additional fund raiser at a Subway restaurant brought in another $1,500 for Evans and her family.

Evans was set to undergo her first round of chemotherapy on the same day as the fund raiser. She is currently in her second week of chemotherapy and radiation and is managing well, said Junior Civitan member Sydney Sides.

“We are eagerly accepting donations from all individuals and organizations,” Sides said in an email to the Salisbury Post. “We hope to do as much as we possibly can to help Haleigh through this awful time.”

Donations may be sent to West Rowan High School, 8050 NC Highway 801, Mt. Ulla, NC 28125. Checks should be made out to West Rowan High School with “Haleigh Evans fund” in the memo line.
