Rowan County unemployment rate dips

SALISBURY — Rowan County’s unemployment rate has mirrored the state’s rate for two months, falling in March to 8.9 percent from 9.5 percent in February.

The February rate, originally reported as 9.6 percent for Rowan, has been seasonally adjusted.


In March 2012, Rowan’s rate was 9.8 percent.

The number of people in the labor force in Rowan dropped in March to 71,560, down from 71,950 in February. There were 72,541 people in the county’s labor force in January.

In March, unemployment rates decreased in 99 North Carolina counties and remained the same in one. All 14 of the state’s metro areas experienced rate decreases.

Graham County had the highest unemployment rate at 17.8 percent, while Orange County had the lowest at 5.6 percent.

When compared to the same month last year, unemployment rates fell in 78 counties, increased in 14 and remained unchanged in eight. Twelve metro areas experienced rate decreases, while one experienced an increase and one remained the same.

The number of people employed statewide increased in March by 17,248 to 4,273,673, while those unemployed fell 26,855 to 419,546. Since March 2012, the number of workers employed statewide increased 32,155, while those unemployed decreased 22,262.

March 2013 unemployment and labor force figures have not been seasonally adjusted.
