Annual Buck Hurley Triathlon is May 5
Sunday, May 5, we are having our fourth annual Buck Hurley Triathlon.
Start time again this year is 7:45 a.m., so we hope to have all participants off the roads before Sunday school. For everyone, participants, Harris Teeter shoppers, churches and neighbors surrounding these routes, here is some information on the routes that will be used for the Buck Hurley Triathlon:
After our participants swim in the pool (300 yards for Sprint and 100 yards for 9-11 year olds, 50 yards for 7-8 and 25 yards for 6 and younger) they will get on the bike and ride the following:
• 10 Mile Bike route: Coming out of the YMCA on Jake Alexander going towards the Salisbury Mall turning right on Statesville Blvd. and right on Brenner. Participants will do this route two times.
After the bike, they park the bike in the transition area which is behind the YMCA on the infield and start running. The following routes will be used.
• 5K for Sprint participants: Go out Harris Teeter side and run behind Harris Teeter to the Greenway on Brenner and turn right. Run Greenway until Old Wilkesboro and turn right. This gets you towards the back of Livingstone College, turn left on Partee and right on Monroe. On Fulton, turn right and again on Lincolnton right going past Salisbury High School back towards the YMCA. Turn right behind High Rock Church back to the track and the finish line.
• 2 Miles Bike route for our 9-11 year olds: Behind Harris Teeter, come on Greenway turn first right on Milford Hills Road, first left on Locke Street and a right on Wilson and again right on Lincolnton turning right behind High Rock Church to the back of the Y and the finish line.
• 1 mile for 9-11 year olds run and 7-8 year olds bike: Behind Harris Teeter on Greenway, turn right on Milford Hills Road and stay on it until Lincolnton Road, turning right and again right behind High Rock Church to the finish line. The half-mile run for 7-8 year olds goes behind Harris Teeter around the cone and back. Six-year-olds and younger will bike and run on YMCA property.
For our churches on these routes, I hope you received correspondence and again we hope to be done before Sunday school (10 a.m.) and really appreciate your patience and support once again. Melanie Thompson of the Salisbury Police department does an outstanding job making it safe for the participants and the least inconvenient for our drivers with the help of Salisbury Fire Department, Salisbury Parks and Recreation, Salisbury Rowan Runners and around 100 volunteers. All are helping to make this a safe, fun, exciting and healthy event where all the proceeds go towards our “We build people and families” campaign. The YMCA does not turn anyone away due to the inability to pay and that campaign supports our cause of course with United Way and many sponsors. Without the support of this community and all the sponsors, this would not be possible and I want to personally thank each one of you. Each year, I am humbled to be part of such community support. Main sponsor is Bill and Shari Graham, followed by Cloninger Ford, Toyota, and Scion, Busby & Webb Orthodontics, Wendy’s, Autumn Care, RAM Pavement, Fowler Physical Therapy, Salisbury Tutoring Academy, Law Office of Koontz & Smith, Carolina Women’s Health Associates, Melanie Marshall DDS, F&M Bank, Food-Lion, Tina Merhoff DDS, Pinochio’s restaurant, Rowan Regional Medical Center and Friends of Volunteers, Salisbury Parks and Rec, Salisbury Rowan Runners and Vac ‘n Dash.
If you want to participate you can come to the JF Hurley Family YMCA to sign up or go online to Sportoften.com and register there.
