SALISBURY — The 2013 Salisbury Farmers Market opened last Saturday in a new location at the corner of Fisher and Jackson streets across from Rowan Public Library. The day was clear and crisp and all the vendors were geared for the crowd of patrons that appeared to take advantage of the fresh produce, baked goods, plants and crafts.

In addition, there were homemade doggie treats, handmade folk art birdhouses, metal art, locally made cheese and salsa. The meat vendors were also there with pasture-raised beef, pork, lamb, chicken and fresh eggs.

Miller Produce had the first strawberries of the year. They were tunnel grown to provide an earlier harvest. Field grown berries will be available in a couple of weeks.

This week there will be an abundance of lettuce and cole crops. Some of the varieties available will be leaf lettuce, romaine, buttercrunch, butterhead, arugula, bok choy, spinach, cabbage, asparagus, spring onions, endive, collards, kale, mustard and Swiss chard. Greenhouse tomatoes may be ready within two or three weeks.

There will be a good supply of vegetable and flower plants to use in containers, beds, landscaping or gardens. Look for numerous varieties of tomatoes as well as annual flowers.

Homemade baked goods looked especially good. There will be a wide range of breads, pies, cakes, cookies, muffins, cinnamon buns, donuts and fried pies. The bakers will welcome special orders.

Check out Creative Gourmet. They offer chicken salad and several flavors of pimento cheese. Inquire about cooking classes with master chef Matt Trexler.

We have a wonderful downtown market with a lot to offer for everyone. Visit the new location and experience the benefit of locally grown and homemade items.
