SALISBURY — Erwin Middle School’s principal will soon be the next executive director of human resources for the Rowan-Salisbury School System.

Kristi Rhone has been the principal at Erwin since 2010. From 2006 to 2010, she was an assistant principal at North Rowan Middle School.

The Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education voted to hire her to the director’s job after a closed session at Monday’s meeting.

“I’m excited and ready to step into this new position,” Rhone said. “I just want to be able to work with the school system as well as the community, be able to build positive relationships and collaborate on things that are in the best interest of students, teachers and staff members.”

Rhone said she thinks educators must be willing to grow and take new steps, and that’s what she did by applying for her new job.

Delores Morris retired as assistant superintendent of human resources in December. The board agreed in February to advertise the position under the title of executive director.

Superintendent Dr. Judy Grissom recommended the board choose Rhone from 36 applicants.

“Her background and leadership skills are excellent,” Grissom said. “Her experience in the military, management and leadership will provide the needed skills for this particular position.”

Rhone graduated from Guilford Technical Community College with an associate’s degree in elementary education. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in middle grades education and a master’s degree in educational leadership from High Point University.

She served as a U.S. Navy leadership instructor from 1990 to 2010. Rhone also worked as a Communities In Schools volunteer and tutor at Ferndale Middle School in High Point from 2000 to 2002, and she taught 8th grade language arts in Guilford County Schools from 2002 to 2006.

Rhone said she doesn’t yet know when she will start as human resources director, and she’s not sure whether an interim principal will be named at Erwin at that time.
