A mother and her son were injured when their vehicle went off Neel Road and hit a tree Saturday evening.

Rescue crews were called to the single-vehicle accident about halfway between N.C. 150 and Sherrills Ford Road just after 6:30 p.m.

Cathy Lemonds, 34, of Woodleaf Road, Salisbury, was driving her 2007 Ford Fusion with her son, Brandon, 13, in the passenger’s seat when she crossed left of center, struck ditch on the southbound shoulder and came to rest against a tree, N.C. State Highway Patrol Trooper R.T. Coward.

It took rescue workers until 7:20 p.m. to free Cathy Lemonds. They had to cut off the roof of the vehicle to get to Lemonds. Her son was not trapped. Both mother and son were wearing their seatbelts, and their air bags deployed, the trooper said.

Emergency scanner traffic reported Brandon Lemonds received a cut to the back of the head and his mother had back and neck injuries. The two were taken to Rowan Regional Medical Center via ambulance.

The vehicle ended up in woods at 1119 Neel Road, which is near an S curve in the road.

In addition to the Highway Patrol, Locke Fire Department and Rowan Rescue responded.
