JON C. LAKEY/SALISBURY POST Multiple fire departments responded to a house fire located at 604 Third Street in Spencer on Thursday morning.

SPENCER — A home at 604 Third Street was gutted by fire this morning, forcing a woman from her home and killing a pet dog.

Heavy black and gray smoke could be seen as firefighters battled flames. The roof eventually collapsed and firefighters were careful as they moved into interior areas.

Fire Chief Jay Baker said no one was injured. He spoke with reporters while crews were still fighting the fire.

The home belongs to Melvin Gladden, who was at work and has been called to come home. A neighbor said Gladden's mother was in the house taking a shower when her daughter yelled at her to get out — that the house was on fire. Both escaped.

A dog, a boxer named Cinnamon, is believed to have been in a crate inside the house.

Gladden's wife died two weeks ago and was buried last week.

Neighbor Bernice Peterson, who lives three doors down was outside when she heard the daughter screaming. She looked at the house and saw gray smoke and flames billowing from the house. She had heard several loud pops at the house. She said some vehicles were moved from the house before they caught fire, though vehicles in a driveway by the house were burned.

The grandmother was sitting on Peterson's porch crying, watching the house burn.

Another neighbor reported hearing two loud noises just before the fire.

Look back for updates as they become available.
