Thieves break into Piedmont Research Station buildings
By Shavonne Potts
Someone broke into several buildings at the Piedmont Research Station, taking more than $15,000 worth of items and a vehicle over the weekend.
The property is located at 8350 Sherrills Ford Road and was last checked Friday night. The theft was reported Saturday by employees. Thieves took mostly construction tools including drills, a wrench set and a nail gun, as well as a truck and money, a Rowan County Sheriff’s Office report said.
Several employees noticed multiple buildings on the property had been broken into and items taken. An employee told investigators a shop door was left open and a window broken. An F-350 pickup that was parked in the shop was missing, but was later found abandoned off Peeler Road. An office on the property was broken into and a desk was rummaged through, but employees said nothing appeared to have been taken.
Employees told authorities thieves broke into the crops office. A window was broken, and a vending machine was damaged and money was taken from it.
A flat-screen TV was taken from the station’s office and money was also found to be missing from an employee’s office. Thieves also took a digital camera and a number of memory cards.
