Thief breaks in, takes beer from closed convenience store Z & H Mart

Authorities say someone broke into a western Rowan County convenience store over the weekend that has been closed since its owner was shot to death in December.

The Z&H Mart, 3610 Mooresville Road, has been on the market since shortly after an attempted robbery ended with the death of proprietor Hecham Abualeinan.

Authorities say someone apparently got a key from a lockbox at the back of the store and used it to get inside the business.

Once inside, the thief got a cart, walked to the drink aisle and took $30 worth of beer. A department report noted the beer was the only thing taken.

The store was last known to be secure April 19. The incident was reported Sunday. The connection of the person who reported the break-in to the business is unclear. According to Rowan County tax records, the convenience store is still owned by a corporation established by Abualeinan.

Christopher Watson, Kevin Canzator and Maurice Alexander Robinson have been charged in Abualeinan’s Dec. 10 death. Watson, who investigators say pulled the trigger, has made public apologies to the victim’s family.

All the men are awaiting trial on murder and robbery charges.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office at 704-216-8700 or Crime Stoppers at 1-866-639-5245.
