Tornado watch expires

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has issued a Tornado Watch for portions of western and central North Carolina and northern South Carolina effective this afternoon and evening from 2 until 9 p.m.

Several tornadoes are possible, along with damaging wind gusts to 70 mph. Hail up to 1 inch in diameter is also possible.

Rowan, Cabarrus, Iredell, Mecklenberg and other counties are included in the watch area.

Precautionary/preparedness actions... Remember... a Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings.

Thunderstorms are expected to increase in coverage and intensity east of the high terrain this afternoon as region is glanced by a midlevel jet stream.
