CHARLOTTE (AP) — Police in Charlotte are working to identify five teens who attacked some geese at a school and broke the windows on a school bus.

The geese were found at the Kennedy Charter School on Monday.

School maintenance director Charles Battaglia says several windows at the school were also broken.

Surveillance video from Sunday evening shows five teenagers damaged the property and used rocks and a board to attack the geese, which nest on the school grounds every spring.

“The individuals came on board and starting smashing the bus up and beating up on the geese, throwing rocks at them until they were bleeding,” Battaglia said.

Carolina Waterfowl Rescue workers took two of the geese to Monroe Animal Hospital Tuesday for treatment of broken bones. A third goose was being treated for cuts on its face. A fourth goose is missing and thought to be dead.

Police have not filed any charges yet, but school officials say three of the five suspects have been identified as students from another school.

Canada geese are protected under the Federal Migratory Bird Act and penalties for harming them include fines of up to $10,000.

A police report estimates the damage to the bus and building will cost more than $1,000.
