Nothing was found after a bomb threat was reported in Building 4 at the Salisbury VA Medical Center at approximately 9:15 this morning. According to a release from Carol Waters, public affairs officer for the VA, the center was “taking this threat very seriously. Our police officers along with local authorities are searching the premises.

The VA evacuated buildings 4 and 11. “All measures to protect our patients, visitors and staff are being taken.”

Director Kaye Green told a Post reporter the local VA received a call from the VA dispatch in Dallas, Texas, where someone there called to say there was a bomb in Building 4. The VA immediately activated the Medical Center’s emergency operations plan, which included evacuating Building 4 and Building 11, located next to Building 4. The VA Police conducted an initial search of the building. Salisbury Police and the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office were called to search using bomb sniffing dogs to search both buildings. Nothing was found in either building. The staff and patients were evacuated to Building 6 where they remain inside a gym there.

Building 4 houses the mental health acute inpatients, the mental residential program and outpatient mental health. Staff psychologists and other mental health professionals were on hand to keep patients calm and explain what happened. The Salisbury Fire Department was also initially dispatched.

Patients who have appointments have been asked to call their doctors to reschedule, VA officials say.
