West soccer 13-0

The West Rowan girls soccer team beat North Iredell 2-1 in NPC action on Wednesday.
The Falcons opened the scoring by pressuring the Raiders into an own goal, but less than five minutes later, the Raiders tied the game.
West (13-0, 8-0) broke the tie with 6:36 remaining as Toni Lucente sailed the game-winner over the hands of the North Iredell keeper.
The back line of Kayla Boley, Claudia Patterson, Meredith Stanley and Meagan Osian made the difference for the fourth-ranked Falcons.
“It definitely wasn’t our best game” West coach Nick Brown said. “But we managed to get the job done, and that’s what it’s all about.”
West plays Carson on Monday. West won 3-2 in the first meeting.
• Leslie Franks and Hunter Ratliff scored two goals each as South Rowan beat East Rowan 5-0 in NPC soccer.
Brooke Helms scored one goal. Macy Ruckart got the shutout Brittany Sprinkles and Skyler Kicinski were defensive standouts.
• Carson’s Alex Allen had another shutout as the Cougars battled to a scoreless tie with Hickory Ridge.

Prep tennis

Carson won 6-3 against South Rowan in NPC tennis.
Singles winners for Carson were Jonathan Martin, Graham Purcell, Casey Lucas, Matthew Martin and Tyler O’Brian. O’Brian-Matt Overcash won in doubles.
• In Carson’s 8-1 win on Tuesday against North Iredell, Jonathan Martin, Matthew Martin, Purcell, Lucas and Overcash won in singles. Martin-Martin, Purcell-Lucas and O’Brian-Overcash swept doubles.
• Salisbury (10-2, 8-0 CCC)got two wins on Wednesday against Lexington, taking a suspended match 5-0 and winning the regularly scheduled match 9-0.
Brock Overcash, Clint Comadoll, David Derrick and Chris Derrick and Spencer Storey won two singles matches each.
Hunter Carlton didn’t get to finish his first match but won the second one.
Overcash-David Derrick, Comadoll-Chris Derrick and Storey-Carlton won in doubles.

Prep softball

Carson lost 3-1 to Robinson on Wednesday despite a homer by Sidney Grkman.
• Caroline Miller pitched a no-hitter and went 3-for-3 with three RBIs as Davie beat R.J. Reynolds 15-0 in CPC softball on Tuesday.
• East Rowan won 4-0 against Northwest Cabarrus on Wednesday.

Jayvee softball

West Rowan won 6-0 against South Rowan on Tuesday. Peyton Greene struck out nine in three innings, and Paije Kistler finished the game and struck out three. Greene and Kistler went 3-for-3 at the plate.

Prep baseball

East Rowan lost 10-4 to Kernersville Glenn on Wednesday at Staton Field.
Michael Caldwell had three hits for the Mustangs. Ty Beck had two hits and drove in three runs. Joseph Peeler (0-2) took the loss.
“That’s the best team we’ve played all year, and we played really well,” East coach Brian Hightower said. “We might have turned the corner tonight.”
• A.L. Brown defeated Hickory Ridge 4-3 in the SPC on Tuesday. C.J. Powell had a bases-clearing triple for the Wonders. Ryan Austin had a run-scoring double. Eldon Peters pitched a complete game.
•West Davidson won 15-0 against Thomasville in a three-inning CCC game on Tuesday.
Zach Queen went 2-for-2 and struck out six.
•East Davidson rolled 12-2 against Central Davidson in a six-inning CCC game on Tuesday. Braxton Shetley pitched four shutout innings. Ryan McIntyre and Tyler Stroup homered.

Prep golf

One day after making all-county, Carson’s Matt Yates kept up his hot play by winning medalist honors in an NPC match at McCanless.
Yates shot 36, edging county champion Logan Shuping of East Rowan. Shuping, South Rowan’s Davis Richards and Statesville’s Jack Archibald shot 37s.
Hunter Chapman shot 39 for South. Coyte Kyles led West Rowan with a 39.
Statesville shot 161 to win the round over Carson (164), West Rowan (167) and South Rowan (167). For the season, Statesville leads West Rowan by 18 and South by 20.

College softball

Belmont Abbey beat Erskine 7-2 in Conference Carolinas action. Samantha Jacobs (North Rowan) pitched a two-hitter and struck out eight. Kaitlyn Jones (South Rowan) drove in a run for the Crusaders.
Jacobs also pitched well in a 2-1 loss to Limestone that went eight innings. Jacobs didn’t allow an earned run.
• Catawba was swept by Wingate 2-0 and 3-1 on Wednesday. Wingate pitcher Stacey Houser won both games.

College golf

Catawba finished seventh in the McAmis Memorial that finished Tuesday in Greeneville, Tenn. Catawba’s Madison Kennedy (Salisbury shot 78-72 — 150 and tied for second. The 72 equaled Kennedy’s career best.

College track

Lees McRae’s Emily Shields and Katherine Shields (Salisbury) were named to Conference Carolinas academic all-conference team.

Boys Mid. school soccer

Erwin beat China Grove 3-1. Wesley Porter scored two goals for the Eagles and Erik Estrada scored on a penalty kick. Stellar defense was played by Owen Webb, Ashton Hopper, Marvin Pleitez, Peyton Lambert, Trenton Frye, Blake Safrit and Fuller Ketchie in goal.
Junior Gomez scored for China Grove.
• Southeast’s boys won 7-1 against North Rowan Middle. Braxton Rogers and Raunel Vasquez scored two goals each for the Patriots. German Delgado, Luis Araujo and Daniel Carrillo had one each. Delgado, Vasquez, Rogers and Michael Rosas had assists. Grayson Owens, Andrew Bonilla, Hernan Hernandez and Jonathan Bautista led the defense.

Girls mid. school soccer

Southeast won 2-0 against North Rowan Middle. Farrah Jordan scored both goals for the Patriots on assists by Abril Sanchez and Alexa Escobar.
Jessica Ferrioli, Jasmin Moctezuma and Sarah Musselwhite played well offensively for Southeast, and Katherine Nunez, Ally Wilhelm, Zinia Figueroa and Camryn Nooner played well defensively.

Intimidators

Kannapolis pounded 15 hits and romped 11-4 at Delmarva on Tuesday. Michael Marjama and Michael Johnson had three hits.
Kannapolis won 4-2 Wednesday behind strong hurling by Euclides Leyer.
Kannapolis’ home opener is tonight against Hickory. It will be Bob Seger Tribute Night as well as Thirsty Thursday. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.

Local golf

Seventy-four GARS members played at Corbin Hills earlier this week. Tom Talbert made an eagle on No. 18.
Low ‘A’ Flight player with a net of 65.30 was Donald Martin. Low ‘B’ Flight player with a net of 63.60 was Bobby Bryant. Low ‘C’ Flight player with a net of 63.90 was John Cress. Low ‘D’ Flight player with a net of 70.30 was Lloyd Clodfelter.
Clive Mahaffey won closest to the pin on No. 2.

Youth volleyball

The High Rock Volleyball Hurricanes were champions in the gold bracket in the Triangle Invitational in Raleigh.
Hurricanes include Kaylin Dowling, Taylor Walton, Brooke Kennerly, Ellen Yang, Kary Hales, Ally Young, Meiann Brock, Ava Link and Allison Ennis. Jan Dowling is the coach.
• The High Rock Volleyball Slammers won the silver medal in the 14 gold division in the Carolina Regional Championships.
Players are Ashley Wood, Riley Adair, Juliana Anderson, Tory Heater, Catherine Wagoner, Katie Blackwell, Lindsay Elmore, Mallory Weast and Ivy Overcaash. Mackenzie White coaches the team.
