KANNAPOLIS — Police have named the 10-year-old boy killed in his home Sunday, authorities say, by his mother’s boyfriend.
Mark Ethan Alexander Stewart was found dead when officers forced their way into the South Ridge Avenue home Sunday evening. His mother, 32-year-old Christi Meslisha Stewart, was badly injured and remains hospitalized.
Eugene William Mays, 39, was charged with murder after police found him early Monday at a house in Gaston County. During his first court appearance Tuesday, Mays waived his right to an attorney and asked a judge to sentence him immediately.
His next court appearance is scheduled for April 30.
Police went to the South Ridge Avenue home after a caller asked authorities to check on the people who lived there. Investigators said Mays also lived at the home.
Mark Stewart attended Royal Oaks Elementary School, where he was in the fifth grade.
