Democrats call on McCrory to challenge voter bills

Raleigh (AP) — North Carolina Democratic Party leaders say they’re turning to voters and calling on Gov. Pat McCrory to voice opposition to a recent spate of bills that would change the state’s voting laws.

Chairman Randy Voller and others attacked a recently unveiled voter ID bill and other divisive proposals at a news conference Monday. The measure is the latest in a series of voting-related bills that critics decry as calculated attempts to limit turnout among Democratic-friendly voting blocs.

Various measures making their way through the legislature would cut back early voting periods, and eliminate Sunday voting and same-day registration. Other measures would require ex-felons to wait five years before reinstating their voting rights and take away tax deductions from the parents of college students who vote where they go to school.
