Local Bridge: Limit Raises

  • Posted: Sunday, April 7, 2013 12:01 a.m.

With the tournament behind us we are resuming our normal game schedule, which includes 1 p.m. Tuesday at Women’s Club and 1 p.m. Friday at Rufty-Holmes.

This week we address the Limit Raise.

If partner opens 1 of a major suit and you have 10-11 points, 4 in his suit and no other biddable suit, you respond 3 of the major.

Now partner knows your count and shape. If he has minimal opening points and a balanced hand he can choose to pass.

If, however, he has minimal points but an imbalanced hand he can safely bid game, feeling he has ruffing power in his hand. If you hold only 3 in his suit and 10 points, bid another suit first and then next time you may want to raise partner to game, if apropos.

If you don’t have game, be happy with your partial score.

Tuesday’s winners were: First, John and Myrnie McLaughlin; tied for second/third, Harold and Carol Winecoff/Judy Gealy and Pat Macon.

This week’s hand was Board No. 11.

The McLaughlin’s bid and made 4S*W for the best E/W score, while the Hill/Pugh pair bid and made 4CN for the best N/S score.

None vulnerable S dealer. This is an example of few points paired with shape to allow a good result.
