LC's Stinson Honored

Livingstone’s men’s basketball coach James Stinson was named the winner of the third annual Clarence “Big House” Gaines College Basketball Coach of the Year for Division II on Wednesday.

The award is presented to the top minority college basketball coach. Harvard’s Tommy Amaker, the former Duke star, was the Division I winner.


Stinson’s Blue Bears won their first Southern Division championship, set a school record for wins with 22, reached the CIAA tournament title game and made their first NCAA tourney appearance.

The announcement was made by Dave Goren, executive director of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association and Hall of Fame.



Catawba athletics

Catawba’s Bob Casmus has been named to the North Carolina Athletic Trainers Hall of Fame. Casmus has been a professional trainer for more than 25 years.

Casmus has worked at Catawba since 1990 and is head athletic trainer and instructor.

• The SAC continues to countdown the top 20 moments from the past two decades. Catawba’s 2012 baseball run that included a Southeast Regional title and a berth in the Division II World Series was named No. 7 on the list.

• Catawba’s women’s tennis team won 5-4 against Newberry. Ally Prior won the decisive match at No. 4 singles. Catawba is 13-8 and 3-4 in SAC play.

• Catawba’s men’s tennis team lost 6-3 to Newberry.

• Catawba lost 18-5 to Lenoir-Rhyne in women’s lacrosse on Wednesday night.

Alyssa Corace led the Indians (4-9) with two goals.



Local golf

The North Rowan High School Booster Club is sponsoring the 11th annual Bob Hundley Golf Tournament on Saturday, May 11, at Corbin Hills.

Entry fee is $50. The mulligan package/putting contest is $10. Lunch is provided at noon. The putting contest is at 1 p.m. Shotgun start at 2 p.m.

• In Corbin Hills Dogfight results: Keith Dorsett, Gene Miller, Bob Whitley and Sal Alfieri shot 133 to win Flight 1.

Tim Collins, David Johnston, Chuck Valley and Tony Queen shot 145 to win Flight 2.

Joe Cress, Chase Jensen, Aaron Rimer and Rex Davis shot 151 to win Flight 3.

Curt Thomas, Luke Thomas and Jarrett Wishon shot 169 to win Flight 4. Gary Powers led Skins winners with two.



South Y

South Rowan YMCA and Athletes in Action will host a flag football tournament on April 13 at the South Y.

Teams are guaranteed three games, with the top eight playing on Sunday, April 14, in a single-elimination for the championship.

The cost is $150 per team or $15 per individual to be placed on a house team.
