RALEIGH (AP) — Republicans in the North Carolina House are poised to unveil a voter ID law they hope will clear the General Assembly after former Gov. Beverly Perdue vetoed their last try.
House Elections Committee Chairman David Lewis of Dunn says Republicans will announce details of the proposed law in a news conference Thursday morning. The unveiling comes after legislatures across the country have already sought tougher voting laws considered by critics as tools of voter suppression.
Although the 2011 bill stopped at Perdue’s desk, Republicans now hold larger majorities in both chambers and carry the support of Gov. Pat McCrory.
In advance of the legislation, lawmakers have held hearings taking public input and examining the effects of voter ID laws enacted in other states.
