RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina House Republicans say their proposal requiring voters to show photo identification to cast ballots takes into account the needs of older adults, the disabled and the poor.
GOP legislators at a news conference unveiled details of a bill they said would be introduced Thursday.
The lawmakers say the measure would require nearly all people who show up at a voting precinct to show some kind of photo identification, starting with 2016 elections. Until then there would be a voter outreach effort letting people know how to obtain an ID and get one for free if needed.
Older adults and others would be able to use expired licenses, while people with disabilities would be exempt.
The House Elections Committee will hold a public hearing on the bill next week.
