RALEIGH (AP) — Authorities say Wake County deputies shot and killed a 35-year-old Durham man who stole a cruiser and led authorities on a chase as they tried to take him to a psychiatric facility.
Sheriff Donnie Harrison said a deputy was taking Jonathan Lee Cunningham to Winston-Salem facility on Sunday when Cunningham started fighting with the deputy. Cunningham was sitting in the front seat.
He says the deputy pulled the car to the side of the road, and the fight continued when both men got out. The sheriff says Cunningham escaped when the deputy slipped. He later ran the cruiser off the road and fled on foot.
Harrison says Cunningham was shot and killed after another struggle with authorities.
Two deputies have been placed on administrative duty while state authorities investigate.
