Women receive free mammograms at East Spencer health initiative
EAST SPENCER — More than 26 women attended the second annual health-care initiative recently at town hall where they were given free mammograms from the Rowan Breast Health Center’s mobile mammogram unit.
The Rowan County Health Department provided information, giveaways and blood pressure checks during the event.
Mayor Barbara Mallett said this year, the town wanted to focus on women’s health issues. The first year the town teamed up with Shady Grove Baptist Church and conducted a healthcare information fair. Mallett said the town is interested in partnering with the medical community to secure a facility, doctor’s officer or mini-clinic that would accommodate the community’s health needs.
“We want to ensure everyone has the opportunity to be well informed on preventive care, warning signs, and good healthy choices. “What a wonderful idea because not enough African-American women get mammograms. I’ve had family members whose lives were taken by breast cancer” said Kiddie Land employee, Ramona Washington, who attended the event.
East Spencer Alderwoman Rosa Burris said the event was important and enlightens women on health issues.
