Several grass fires break out across county
Fire crews were kept busy Friday evening with several grass fires reported around the county, including one that scorched about 20 acres on Fraley Acres Lane.
Most of the activity occurred after 8 p.m. as the winds picked up and calls of controlled burns getting out of hand started coming in to emergency communicators.
The 364 Fraley Acres Lane fire was the first big one crews had to battle, then grass or woods fires were called in at 257 Oak Club Lane near the High Rock Boat & Ski Club and at 7295 Woodleaf Road.
The fire near the Boat & Ski Club, which started when a controlled burn near the water got out of hand in the wind, also approached several homes in the area.
Among the last reported fires called in was one at 106 Marsh Camp Road after 9 p.m.
No serious damage was reported from any of the incidents, but one Gold Hill Fire Department vehicle was briefly stuck in swampy ground while trying to get to one of the brush fires.
