Rowan-Cabarrus offering spring classes

Rowan-Cabarrus Community College is gearing up for spring and honoring Earth Day with a variety of Earth-friendly and other classes.

• Fortify Your Fitness (and Finish a 5K) — Participants will learn and apply information on topics such as running form, stretching, strengthening, nutrition, injury prevention, safety and race day preparation. Included is individual coaching with a training schedule from a certified running coach, personal trainer and wellness professional as well as a dry-fit shirt. This class is for new runners and walkers as well as previous runners who need a restart. Please bring water, a pen and appropriate running apparel for the first class distance of half of a mile. Class two will discuss shoes and equipment.

• Beginning Yoga — (six weeks). This course introduces the fundamentals of yoga with a focus on proper breathing techniques, relaxation and correct body positions. Yoga strengthens the body and mind through exercises in relaxation and balance. Space is limited to facilitate individualized instruction. Bring a yoga mat and wear loose, comfortable clothing.

• Power Vinyasa Yoga — (six weeks). Vinyasa means “breath-synchronized movement,” and power Vinyasa yoga combines a series of poses with the power of inhaling and exhaling to achieve mind-body balance. Vinyasa movements are smoothly flowing and almost dance-like, which explains why it is sometimes referred to as Vinyasa Flow Yoga. Open to beginners and experienced students alike, regardless of age or physical ability. Students should wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat, towel and water.

Wednesdays, April 3-May 8, 5:30-6:45 p.m., NCRC, Kannapolis, RCCC Building, Room 219; registration, $50.

• Sell It Online — This class will introduce you to the world of online auction sites such as TIAS, ETSY, eBay, Ruby Lane and Proxibid and more. We will discuss the pros and cons of each site, look at business requirements, explore shipping alternatives and more. Each student will be allowed to bring one item to research, price, build the description, take photographs and post for sale online through an auction platform of your choice.

Tuesdays, April 9-30, 6-9 p.m., North Campus, Salisbury, Building 400, Room 4126; registration, $65.

• Upcycling 101 — You will learn the basics of turning the old into something new and useful, all while getting those creative juices flowing and practicing environmental sustainability. Throughout the course, you will create an organizational board to be used for memos, keys, jewelry…you decide. Each student is asked to bring a frame of choice (recommended minimum size of 11-by-14 inches) to class (think window frames, old prints in the attic, yard sale finds). All other materials and supplies are provided.

Tuesdays, April 9 and 16, 6:30-8:30 p.m., Trashed Creative Recycling Studio in Historic Downtown Concord; registration, $45.

• Introduction to Bonsai — After a short lecture and demonstration on style and care aspects, each student will create their own bonsai from scratch. With guidance from the instructor, participants will style, wire and transplant their newly created bonsai into a container. Included in the class: plant (garden juniper), bonsai container, wire, bonsai soil and bonsai shears .

Supplies to bring: It is recommended that you bring gardening gloves; juniper foliage is sometimes a little prickly.

• Bright Ideas for Going Green at Home — Learn ideas to start saving energy and money in this class by Ken Clifton. Topics will include solar energy, home energy audits, efficient lighting and insulation, and electric cars and charging stations. • Basics of Solar Electric Generation — Learn how you can use the sun to generate electricity with solar panels. This class will cover the details and process of buying and installing solar panels on or around your residence or business.

• Digital Photography: How To Use Your Digital Camera — The classes are perfect for real estate agents, novice photographers or anyone who would like to take better vacation photos.

Students should bring their textbooks, cameras, storage cards, batteries, USB cables and manuals. The registration fee is $100 and does not include the textbook — “Welcome to Digital Photography - 2nd Edition,” ISBN: 978-1-59136-175-6 or 978-1-59136-065-0.

Fridays, May 17-June 14, (no class on June 7), 9 a.m.-noon, North Campus, Salisbury, Building 400, Room 4128; registration, $100 plus textbook.

• Motorcycle Basic Rider Course (BRC) — Co-sponsored by the NC Motorcycle Safety Education Program and RideNow Powersports, this course teaches the skills needed to operate a motorcycle safely in traffic. The class is designed for new riders and re‑entry riders who have not ridden in a long time, however, experienced riders have also found it to be quite beneficial. The student learns the location and operation of the controls of the motorcycle. Students will practice riding to demonstrate they have the strength, balance and coordination to perform straight-line riding, shifting, turning and stopping exercises. Students will learn street riding strategies for riding on the highway in traffic, as well as skills to avoid accidents, including emergency braking, swerving and proper cornering techniques.

We provide the motorcycles, but ask that you bring your own DOT approved helmet (must be three-quarters or more). In addition, you will be required to wear eye protection, a long sleeved shirt or jacket, long pants (preferably denim), over‑the‑ankle footwear and full-fingered gloves (preferably leather). “acceptable footwear for riding activities” includes any over-the-ankle leather footwear. Hiking boots and tennis-type shoes that cover the ankle and are reinforced with padding and thick canvas or leather are also acceptable.

Successful completion of the BRC will earn you a skills waiver card for the NCDMV. This means the DMV will not require you to take their motorcycle riding test. You will still be required to visit your local DMV office and take their written exam before being issued a motorcycle endorsement. The following weekend classes meet on Friday evenings from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and require full attendance for successful completion.

The classes are held at RideNow Powersports, Concord (254 Concord Parkway S.). The registration fee for all Basic Rider Courses is $169. Please register early, as class size is very limited — Friday, April 26 through Sunday, April 28; Friday, May 10 through Sunday, May 12; Friday, May 24 through Sunday, May 26.
