West Rowan won 5-0 against Statesville on Monday to stay in the driver’s seat in the NPC race at the halfway point.

West (11-0, 6-0) is ranked fifth in 3A and has outscored opponents 51-6.

Kayla Boley scored the first goal two minutes into the game off Toni Lucente’s corner kick, and Mariah Coleman’s 18-yard shot off Rebecca Parker’s assist made it 2-0 at halftime.

Coleman assisted on a Kelly Boley goal that made it 3-0, and Coleman poked a ball between two defenders and finished with her left foot to make it 4-0.

Lucente scored with a blast from 35 yards out to close the scoring.

West allowed only two shots against keeper Joana Samano.

Madison Muire played well in the midfield, and Kayla Boley, Claudia Patterson, Meagan Osian and Meredith Stanley were solid on the backline.

West plays at Mooresville on Wednesday, while Statesville takes on Carson.

• Salisbury lost to Central Davidson 4-2 on Monday at Ludwig Stadium.

Salisbury carved out 1-0 and 2-1 leads, but the Spartans, who are ranked 11th in 2A, scored three goals in the final 19 minutes to decide it.

It was 1-1 at the break.

Kate Grant scored both Salisbury goals. Kayla Honeycutt had an assist for the Hornets (5-5, 1-1 CCC).

Maritsa Mourouzidis, Emma Labovitz, Susannah Dixon and Kathryn Rusher played well for the Hornets.

Alex Myers and Hayley Westervelt were standouts for the Spartans (9-1-1, 2-0 CCC).

“We went up against a team with only one loss (to 4A North Davidson) and made them beat us,” SHS coach Matt Parrish said. “Our work ethic and heart tonight are what we’re looking for in a consistent basis.”

• In another CCC matchup, West Davidson edged Lexington 1-0.

Prep baseball

The third annual F&M Bank Classic will be held at CMC-NorthEast Stadium on April 4-6.

The field has been expanded to 10 teams this season. Five Rowan teams will battle five Cabarrus teams for the Classic Cup.

East, West, South, Carson and Salisbury will represent Rowan County against Cabarrus’ A.L. Brown, Northwest, Mount Pleasant, Robinson and Concord.

Tickets are $6 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.

Three-day tournament passes are available for $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors.

• Monday’s Salisbury-North Rowan game was postponed due to wet grounds.

• Close to a full slate is set for today, with North Iredell at Carson; South Rowan at Statesville; West Iredell at West Rowan; Central Davidson at Salisbury (afternoon); South Davidson at North Rowan; A.L. Brown at Mount Pleasant, and West Forsyth at Davie.

Prep boys golf

South Rowan won Monday’s NPC match at McCanless.

South shot 156 to top Statesville (157), West Rowan (158), East Rowan (168), Carson (178), North Iredell (181) and West Iredell (195).

East’s Logan Shuping shot 34 for medalist honors.

South scorers were Davis Richards (37), Evan Neas (38), Josh Pope (40) and Brennan Lambert (41).

West Rowan scorers were Jake Kennedy (38), Coyte Kyeles (38), Denny Triche (39) and Jacob Watson(43).

East’s other scorers were Jacob Durham (44), Collin Darnell (45) and Spencer Bost (45).

Prep softball

East Rowan won Friday’s game with Statesville by forfeit. The big Carson-East game will be played on Wednesday (originally it was scheduled for Thursday) at East at 4:15 p.m.

College baseball

UNC Pembroke’s Brett Huffman (West Rowan) had three hits in Sunday’s 13-1 win against Flagler. UNC Pembroke (20-6) is ranked 15th.

• Catawba is ranked 18th and plays at Belmont Abbey todayy.

Women’s lacrosse

Catawba rolled to a 15-2 win against Chowan at Shuford Stadium on Monday.

Catawba (3-8) got four goals from Chelsea Bauer.

Mid. school girls soccer

Erwin beat Southeast 3-2.

Alana Miller and Shannon Mahaffey scored for the Eagles. Keeper Kaitlyn Thompson made five saves in the first half before being injured.

Farrah Jordan scored both goals for Southeast. Sarah Musselwhite and Alexa Escobar assisted. Sandy Alvarez, Camryn Nooner, Abril Sanchez and Zinia Figueroa led the SE defense.

• Erwin won 3-0 against North Rowan Middle. Miller and Faith Faller scored.

Mid. school boys soccer

Southeast’s boys beat Erwin 9-0. Luis Araujo and Michael Rosas scored two goals each. Irving Flores, Grayson Owens, Daniel Carrillo, Braxton Rogers and Yoris Vanegas scored a goal each. Assists were by Flores, Rogers, Ramon Guerrero and Santiago Reyes. German Delgado, Daniel Valverde, Hernan Hernandez, Andrew Bonilla led the defense.

Youth volleyball

The High Rock Volleyball Club Hot Shots won the Silver Division (16s) regional championship at a tournament in Dobson. Team members are Taylor Shoaf, Rachel Moore, Kaytee Leonguerrero, Mary Seifert, Rebecca Hutcherson, Maddie Gentry and Jordan Kepley.

Youth soccer

The FCCA Green Dragons 9U team won 3-0 and 4-3 in Gastonia over the weekend.

Ben Childress scored three goals, while Hank Webb, Colin Donaldson, Maddox Goodnight and Oscar Garcia had one each. Will Webb was outstanding in goal.

Local runners

YMCA Warriors and their parents ran in the Millbridge Elementary 5K.

• Scott Julian was first in his age group in 20:51 and was ninth overall.

• Rebekah Julian was the fastest female in 21:53.

• Matthew Burroughs (age 8) was first in 8-unders and 26th overall in 24:48.

• Eli Julian (7) was second in the 8-under division and 27th overall in 24:54.

• Noah Julian (9) was third in the 9-11 age group in 23:25 and 20th overall.

• Jennifer Burroughs was eighth in her age group in 20:51.

• Jason Burroughs (3) fell down at the start but still finished the Fun Run in 5:44.

• The Warrior Way 5k Trail Run and half-mile Fun Run will be held at Salisbury Community Park on April 6.
